When people think of Apple TV+, they often recall hit shows like Severance, Presumed Innocent, Ted Lasso, and others that have propelled the streaming service to relevance. However, the platform also boasts an impressive selection of films worth exploring.

With Apple TV+ being free for the whole weekend as part of an early year promotion by the tech giant Apple, here are five movies worth watching if you take advantage of the free trial.

CODA

If you're looking for a moving film that also won the Oscar for Best Picture, look no further than CODA. The movie tells the story of Ruby (Emilia Jones), a 17-year-old girl who is the only hearing member of her family. Throughout the film, she navigates the challenges of being part of a deaf family while pursuing her dreams in music. CODA also won two other Academy Awards in addition to Best Picture, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur.

Flora and Son

Continuing the music trend, another excellent film to check out on Apple TV+ is Flora and Son. Directed by John Carney — well-known for Sing Street — the film explores the dynamic between a single mother (Eve Hewson) and her rebellious teenage son (Jack Reynor). Their relationship is rocky at first, but the story develops beautifully as the film progresses, featuring musical numbers that are sure to get you tapping your feet.

Napoleon

Yes, most of us have likely heard of Napoleon in world history class, but the film Napoleon offers a captivating portrayal of the historical figure, with the multi-talented Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. Featuring stunning cinematography and thrilling scenes, the movie is well worth watching. However, at more than two hours long, it includes some slower moments.

Killers of The Flower Moon

Did we mention long movies? Well, it doesn’t get much longer than a nearly three-and-a-half-hour Western Killers of The Flower Moon, created by directing legend Martin Scorsese. Despite its length, the film does a powerful job of capturing the experiences of members of the Osage Nation.

If that’s not enough to spark interest, the cast features heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons. Add a strong performance by Lily Gladstone — who likely would have won Best Actress if not for Emma Stone’s standout role in Poor Things — and you’ve got a film worth investing your time in.

Fly Me to the Moon

If you want a laugh, then look no further than Fly Me to the Moon. The film stars two of the biggest names in Hollywood in Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, as a marketing executive and a NASA official who spark a romance. And while I am hesitant on giving this zany historical rom com my stamp of endorsement, it has enough laughs and star power to make it a good watch.
