David Corenswet, star of the new Superman reboot, spoke about the preparation he underwent to play the Man of Steel. The actor revealed that he exchanged letters with Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill, both of whom have also played the iconic superhero.

Before taking on the role in the James Gunn film, the 31-year-old actor sought approval from previous Supermen before putting on the blue cape. While they gave their approval, they didn’t have any advice for the actor.

The main advice Cavill and Hoechlin gave him, Corenswet added, was "an encouragement and a sense of, you know, have fun with it. Which I think is Superman's way of doing it too." He wasn’t too offended by not getting any advice from his fellow men of steel, he believes that not giving advice is a very Superman thing to do as the hero is “not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”

While he had neither met Hoechlin or Cavill face to face, they had exchanged written words and he expressed that he's "excited to meet them one day, it’ll be great when we can all get in a room together.”

The actor, who also appeared in Twisters, admitted there wasn’t much help the stars could do to help because “you sort of have to do your own thing.” But Corenswet admitted that their kind words were enough to help him take on the task. “But it was really wonderful to get words of encouragement from them and then to be able to write to them and talk about how appreciative I was of the way that they had stewarded the character in their time.”

Son of the late Christopher Reeve, who brought Superman to life in the 1970s, Will Reeve was also on hand to often Corenswet some encouragement. While Corenswet admits that Reeve would not want to be the person to place approval or disapproval, his encouragement was appreciated by The Politician actor.

“But when you have somebody like him on set who's excited at what they're seeing and who is excited for you, that's a very encouraging sign and means a lot,” he says. Will Reeve has a small cameo in the film as a newsreader.

Dean Cain was less impressed with the new Superman reboot. The Lois & Clark star called out Gunn for saying the new Superman is an allegory about immigration and about kindness. “How woke is Hollywood going to make this character?” Cain noted in a rant to TMZ before admitting he had yet to see the new DC blockbuster.

Corenswet made a positive impression on director James Gunn,  “David had better chemistry with Rachel [Brosnahan] because she’s a very controlled actor, and David is a little bit more, you know, loose, and that creates a different type of dynamism on-screen.”

Superman is now in theaters.
