Brake pads just don't sell themselves, folks. It takes two motivated salesmen to hit the road and make sure that every car part dealer in the Midwest knows that Callahan Brake Pads are the best in the business.
In 1995, David Spade partnered up with his real-life best bud and delivered one of the seminal comedy movies of the 1990s. Tommy Boy was an unexpected hit that not only showcased the box office power of its titular star, Chris Farley, but also the quick, rapier-like wit of his sidekick, David Spade.
Following the success of the film, there was an immediate call for a sequel. Unfortunately, Farley would pass away before it could be realized. However, that doesn't mean Spade didn't continue to receive script offers and pitch ideas for a second movie.
Working around the absence of the larger-than-life comedian, Farley, is obviously an enormous hurdle to overcome when trying to tell another story, but on a recent podcast, Spade confirmed that there was one idea that had gotten some traction, while also admitting It would be a pipe dream.
On Theo Von's podcast, the comedian spoke about the possibility, joking that the title would have been Tommy Boy 2: Electric Boogaloo. He continues, "I was pitched an idea where our kids are together...I would come help them on the road or something...and this was like, two years ago. But I just couldn't find a scenario with no Chris Farley."
Spade expounded further, "He's the whole movie. He's the title. I just can't imagine. It would be such a sellout. The magic in the bottle was Chris, so. I had a good part and I had a lot of fun in it, but it was about Christopher. If we had done another one back then, it would have been a blast."
Farley and Spade's kids on the road selling brake pads sounds like a bit of a stretch, and Spade is smart enough to realize where his bread was buttered, and wisely declined. Some movies are better left alone for their singular greatness. Let Tommy Boy rest in peace alongside its star.
Besides, his instincts about a sequel being a "sellout" are correct. No matter how producers would've trussed up a Tommy Boy sequel with new stars, a supposedly loyal tale, or anything else, the feature would've been poorly received. Spade even points out that he [Farley] is the titleāthe whole movie. Fans would jump on such a fact immediately, and it's best to not poke the bear in such a situation.
