We often hear the buzz of a specific film or are excited about a movie, only to be let down. There is nothing worse than being super excited about the upcoming release of the movie and only walking out of the theater mad. It is the end of the year, and many movies fit into this mold for me, because of that, I am sharing my list of the most disappointing films of 2024.
For years, we have seen people hype movies at premieres or film festivals and wonder if they are worth it when they finally see them. Or, on the flip side, a remake or a sequel is on the horizon of a favorite film of yours, and it comes out, and you end up mad because it ended up rough around the edges. Either way, we always have those movies that leave us wanting more.
Most Disappointing Movies of 2024
Longlegs
I liked Osgood Perkins's underrated 2020 gem, Gretel & Hansel, so I was excited to check this one out. The hype surrounding Longlegs said this was a modern-day horror classic. Sadly, I walked out of the theater wondering if I saw a different movie. The script was underwhelming, and even with the short run time of 87 minutes, it felt like three hours.
Deadpool & Wolverine
The Ryan Reynolds/Deadpool schtick has been wearing on me for years. I enjoyed the first two movies in the franchise, but Reynolds's approach to his films has seen him play a variation of Deadpool in these movies and has begun to wear out his welcome. Let's toss in that Logan is one of the greatest comic book movies of all time, the idea of bringing back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine was something I didn't want to see. This was overblown, not funny, and highly underwhelming. Not even an appearance from Wesley Snipes as Blade could save this bad movie.
Kinds of Kindness
Coming off the Academy Award-winning movie Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos reteamed with Emma Stone for Kinds of Kindness. Toss in the rest of the star-studded cast of Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, and Margaret Qualley, I felt like we were in for a real treat. Boy, was I wrong; this was easily the most disappointing movie of 2024. This was dull, bloated, and downright a snoozefest.
Ghosterbusters: Frozen Empire
Ghostbusters: Afterlife was one of the biggest surprises of 2021. The nostalgia mixed with an exciting new cast made for a great time. I thought for sure they would follow suit and make this latest installment just as good. Ultimately, it threw everything we loved about Afterlife out the window. I almost wish they would've let the franchise ride into the sunset after Afterlife.
Anora
I had zero expectations for Sean Baker's latest movie because I hadn't liked either of his previous two outings. That said, Anora was getting quite the buzz as an Oscar front-runner in many categories, and I needed to see it myself. Much like his last two movies, the script was not good, and the performances didn't do anything for me. This was hyped to the moon and was a letdown.
