We all know that January is typically considered the dump-off or weak month in movies. It's also when you see movies attempting to get qualifying Oscar runs with limited releases and wide releases. Either way, I share the films I look forward to watching next month.
As I mentioned, the month is typically seen as studios trying to dump off movies, hoping to get any traction at the box office. The first full weekend of the month sees the release of Better Man, The Last Showgirl, and Hard Truths, which all got qualifying runs in December to put themselves in the Oscar race. The Colors Within and September 5 follow suit later in the month.
Most Anticipated Movies of January 2025
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (In Theaters Jan. 10)
Nick is back on the hunt in Europe and closes in on Donnie amid the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia. They begin to plot a massive heist of the world's largest diamond exchange. Christian Gudegast returns to direct the sequel that stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr.
Back in Action (Netflix on Jan. 17)
Back in Action follows Emily and Matt, who, years after giving up their lives as CIA spies to start a family, are thrust back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown. The film marks Cameron Diaz's return, as she stars in her first movie since 2014 alongside Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx.
Wolf Man (In Theaters on Jan. 17)
Leigh Whannell co-wrote and directed Wolf Man, which Blumhouse Productions produced. The film follows Blake and his family, who are attacked by an unseen animal, leading to Blake behaving strangely and transforming into something that jeopardizes his wife and daughter. The film stars Christopher Abbot and Julia Garner.
Companion (In Theaters on Jan. 31)
Companion follows the death of a billionaire, which sets off a chain of events for Iris and her friends during a weekend trip to his lakeside estate. The film, which comes from the producers of Barbarian, stars Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher. This is at the TOP of my list for January.
You’re Cordially Invited (Prime Video on Jan 30)
In what may be the perfect comedic duo, Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon are teaming up for You're Cordially Invited for Prime Video. The film follows a woman planning her sister's wedding, and the father of the bride-to-be discovers their destination wedding at the resort is double-booked. When both parties decide to share the small venue, chaos ensues.
