After the opening week of the year left us with much to desire in the new release world, we have several big-time releases to check out, including a couple of movies vying for Oscars. As we do each and every week, we share the latest films set to hit theaters and streaming for the week of January 10.

The mass audience often misses limited-release films, followed by not wanting to spend top dollar renting a movie on-demand. Because of that, I recommend you check out one of my favorite movies, 2024, A Different Man—a brilliant thriller with fantastic performances from Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson. The film will begin streaming on MAX on January 11.

The first big release of 2025 is Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The sequel to the 2018 action banger sees the return of Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. Big Nick (Butler) is on the hunt for Donnie, who is in Europe mixed up with the infamous Panther mafia planning a diamond exchange heist. It's taken us seven years to get the sequel, and I can't wait to see it.

The Last Showgirl

The Pamela Anderson-led drama about a seasoned showgirl whose future is in doubt as the show she starred in for 30 years is closing. Anderson has received much love from critics, including being nominated for Best Actress. The film has a star-studded supporting cast with Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Batista, and Bille Lourd.

Two films expanding wide this week are Hard Truths and Better Man, which are in the Academy Awards conversation. Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars in Hard Truths and seems destined for her first Oscar nomination, while  Better Man is in the conversation for best sound and song.

Streaming

Ad Vitam (Netflix)

A French film called Ad Vitam leads the way on the streaming side of things. The film follows Franck Lazarev, who hunts to find his wife, who a mysterious group of armed men kidnapped. He is caught by a former member of the French Elite Squad and pulled into things beyond his control. The trailer alone for this one shows promise.

If you are looking for some recent releases to check out you might have missed, here are a few options: Carry On (Netflix), The Six Triple Eight (Netflix), and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix). Or, if you want to get yourself at the forefront of Oscar conversations, check out Conclave on Peacock.
