Denzel Washington, one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, has announced his retirement from acting. The veteran actor known for Training Day, Remember The Titans and The Equalizer series of movies has done everything possible, so he's decided to hang it up. Washington is, however, working on a few projects before finalizing said decision.
One of the films Washington is doing before retiring is Black Panther 3. Ryan Coogler, the director of the previous two installments, is creating a part specifically for Washington; Coogler hasn't unveiled which Marvel character he's outlining for the John Q actor. Perhaps Washington will portray an advisor to Shuri (Letitia Wright) since she's without much support. Shuri has Nakia and M'Baku to turn to as allies, but in terms of counsel, the new Queen doesn't have too many people to turn to.
Washington could also be on the opposite end of the hero-villain dynamic. Audiences have seen how warring tribes in Wakanda coexist despite tense alliances. Maybe one of them challenges Shuri. M'Baku seemingly raised one of his own during the concluding moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. As such, Washington's character may be another general who doesn't agree with Shuri's way of ruling the kingdom. There will obviously be conflict following the Talokan invasion, so it makes sense that other nation leaders want to reorganize Wakanda's royal hierarchy.
Now, fans may wonder why an acclaimed actor like Denzel Washington has singled out a superhero movie to be one of the final movies in his illustrious career, and there's a sentimental reason to it.
Chadwick Boseman, the original star of Black Panther, met Washington while in college. Boseman's acting teacher coordinated to have him and a group of students attend a summer program at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford where Washington's role was as an anonymous benefactor. No one had any idea beforehand, and the humanitarian still remains humble regarding his generosity.
So, learning that Washington will play a part in a franchise that he helped get off the ground—albeit by a distant connection—is the most fitting thing possible for him. Choosing the third Black Panther movie seemed a little out of place for an actor with so many accolades to his name but paired with the fact that he's connected to the franchise, makes his participation logical. And after hearing Chadwick Boseman say more than once "there's no Black Panther without Denzel Washington," gives audiences an obvious reason for his participation moving forward.
It's worth mentioning that Black Panther 3 doesn't currently have a release date. The film may be in one of Marvel's open slots slated for 2026, 2027, or 2028 (February 13, 2026; November 6, 2026; July 23, 2027; November 5, 2027; February 18, 2028; May 5, 2028; and November 18, 2028), though no one knows with certainty.
