Christopher Nolan has been one of the most respected and revered blockbuster filmmakers of the 21st century. He's been dazzling audiences since Memento in 2000, and he recently took home the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for Oppenheimer.

What is there left to do? Well, apparently, the answer is to go in a completely different direction. Nolan is generally a secretive filmmaker who prefers to keep the details of his films under wraps, but there's been some fascinating reports regarding his upcoming release.

Here's what you need to know about Nolan's next film.

The film will star Tom Holland and Matt Damon

Matt Damon has become a fixture in Christopher Nolan's troupe of actors. The Oscar nominee has appeared in Interstellar (2014) and the aforementioned Oppenheimer in supporting roles, and will seemingly do the same in Nolan's next film.

The bigger surprise, however, is the recent casting of Tom Holland. The British actor is best known for playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the notion of him headlining a Nolan film has caught some fans off guard.

It's worth noting that Holland has proven himself to be an adept actor in films like The Impossible (2012) and The Lost City of Z (2016), so we imagine he's up to the challenge.

The film will be released in 2026 through Universal

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed, in addition to the casting, that the film will be distributed through Universal. This will be the second Nolan release to bear the Universal logo, following Oppenheimer, as the director had previously spent a decade and a half at Warner Bros.

The outlet also confirmed the release date for the film, which remains untitled: July 17, 2026. This is pretty standard as far as Nolan releases go, as he is one of the few filmmakers who can still draw big box office numbers for original concepts on the strength of his name.

The film is alleged to be about vampires in the 1920s

There has been lots of speculation about the plot of Nolan's upcoming film. Some have theorized that it will be a spy film, others have posited that it will be a remake of the 1970s TV series The Prisoner. A third, and more outlandish possibility, however, has been presented by Gizmodo.

The outlet alleges that the next Nolan film be will set in the 1920s, and will revolve around vampires. If true, the film will follow a seeming trend of auteur directors trying their hand at vampiric period pieces like Robert Eggers' Nosferatu and Ryan Coogler's Sinners. We have to admit, we're intrigued.
