Anyone who loves books, witty banter, music, and copious amounts of coffee is almost guaranteed to be a fan of Gilmore Girls. The iconic series ran for seven seasons, initially on The WB channel, from 2001 to 2007. Led by a star-studded cast including Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, Alexis Bledel as Rory Gilmore, and Kelly Bishop as Emily Gilmore, the comedy-drama series became beloved for its quick-witted dialogue, unforgettable quirky characters, and poignant storylines that resonated with families worldwide.
In 2014, Gilmore Girls began streaming on Netflix, which later led to the platform producing the controversial revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, in 2016. The four-episode miniseries brought back most of the original cast, with a few notable exceptions, including the late actor Edward Herrmann, who portrayed Richard Gilmore during the original series, as he had unfortunately passed away in 2014.
The revival certainly had some of the most endearing aspects of what made the series extraordinary, including seeing our favourite characters and locations once again, and watching the unmatched sparring sessions between Lorelai, Rory, and Emily. On the other hand, it also lacked other essential Gilmore Girls elements, such as the memorable Gilmore family dinners, humane and relatable character arcs, and a solid ending. The fact that Rory's character was also pretty much damaged beyond redemption didn't sit well with many fans, including me.
Aside from the egregious mistakes the revival made, there's still some potential for some interesting plotlines that could tie up some loose ends left from both the original series and the Netflix special, which is why the new home for the GG series is pretty exciting.
In July 2025, it was revealed that Gilmore Girls will have a new home, as it will begin airing on the Hallmark Channel starting from August 2025.
The Hallmark Channel is primarily known for its romantic and family-friendly movies and TV shows, particularly those set around the Christmas season. Hallmark original content is also severely criticised and known for its predictable and repetitive plots. Still, it also holds a special place in people's hearts due to its feel-good vibes and comforting storylines that one seeks during the holidays.

According to Deadline, Gilmore Girls "will air all seven seasons in sequential order, starting with the pilot. It will air on weekdays from 2-6 pm and on weekends from 8-10 am, in addition to special occasion marathons, as part of the linear-only partnership." While plenty will only side-eye this decision, or even roll their eyes at it, it also provides food for thought if one looks closer at what this decision might mean as well.
As previously stated, both the original series and the miniseries left several plot holes in the overarching story. I won't spoil the main obvious one for those new fans out there who still haven't ventured into the magnificence of the GG world, but needless to say, we need urgent answers to that 2016 finale. ASAP.
With Hallmark's comforting touch, there could be plenty of opportunities to have at least a Gilmore Girls holiday film, or even a series of them. There could even be another miniseries centred around the holidays of these characters running around Stars Hollow, dealing with their personal stuff while also trying to save Christmas. Or there could also be new opportunities for spin-offs to centre around other characters outside the Gilmore clan, including Lane Kim, Sookie St. James, and Michel Gerard.
All in all, the potential for expanding the Gilmore Girls world is now in Hallmark's hands, and it would be a delightful opportunity to bring joy to OG and new fans alike by creating more content regarding one of the best, comforting, and special series ever made. Gilmore Girls is also known for its seasonal episodes, so what better way to honour everything this series means to its watchers than to delve into the endless possibilities of having more stories set within this world? Hallmark, here's your chance to correct the wrongs of the past and potentially create the Gilmore Girls multiverse.
