Task Force X, the once-funny bad guys of the DC live-action universe, are no more. James Gunn recently updated fans on them, elaborating on where the Suicide Squad stands in the rebooted DC universe.
According to the current head of DC development, The Suicide Squad is nothing more than a "fond memory" in the live-action universe. Only the animated MAX series, Creature Commandos, will be part of the narrative moving forward. One facet, however, that's remained consistent is how Peacemaker (John Cena) killed Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in the feature-length film. Gunn noted that Flag Sr. mentions the plotline while speaking to his current comrades, confirming the connection.

In any case, Task Force X is relegated to animated adventures until Rick Flag Sr. makes his jump to the live-action universe. Frank Grillo will play the cinematic counterpart in Superman 2025 and again in Peacemaker Season Two, which points to another potential Suicide Squad.
The odds of Creature Commandos venturing into Peacemaker's territory are unlikely, but Flag Sr. forming an impromptu team to hunt down Christopher Smith sounds plausible. Of course, a cameo by one of Flag's monstrous buddies would boost ratings. Whenever animated characters get adapted into live-action versions, their appearance makes all the headlines. Plus, what better way to cap off Season Two than with Smith's death? The story has to end eventually, and the only justifiable conclusion is for Flag Sr. to kill Peacemaker as vengeance for his son.
Mind you, Task Force X isn't technically dead either. Amanda Waller is still alive and kicking, controlling both teams from afar, and she'll be at the center of her own series at some point. Viola Davis is reportedly returning to play ARGUS head Amanda Waller in the series of the same name. The question is, when will it debut on MAX?
With a three-year hiatus and no new information available, things don't look so good for Waller. Season One of Peacemaker also lacked Davis' presence. Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) supposedly spoke to Waller over the phone a few times, but the audience never heard or saw her. Perhaps Davis' absence was due to scheduling conflicts.

Whatever the reason, the longtime actress is back as her DC comics character in Creature Commandos. And with her colleague, Rick Flag Sr., moving to the live-action universe in Superman 2025, odds are Waller will return alongside him. She'll be involved at some point when Flag Sr. (Grillo) searches for his son's killer, so Davis likely has a bit part in the movie, too. The Woman King actress has to return for Peacemaker Season Two, specifically after Season One concluded with some dramatic events plaguing the country. Waller can't sit idly by while they transpire, so she'll have to drop in for a quick appearance.
Superman 2025 premieres on July 11, 2025. Peacemaker Season Two begins streaming on MAX in August 2025.
