James Gunn makes a surprising announcement about a Superman sequel

He even shared the release date of July 9, 2027.

Superman in 2027… and oh yeah, Batman too

Let’s pause here: in 2027, we’re getting both Man of Tomorrow andThe Batman Part II. Two of DC’s biggest icons dropping in the same year. Honestly? That’s illegal levels of hype. The kind of hype that makes you pray no asteroid decides to check out Earth the day before release.

What the posters reveal (and what they don’t)

Here’s where it gets juicy: the first posters, illustrated by legends Jim Lee and Mitch Gerads, don’t just show Superman squaring off against Lex Luthor. One of them shows Superman helping Lex tighten bolts on his armor. Yeah, apparently the Man of Steel now doubles as LexCorp’s part-time mechanic.

So, what does that mean? Partnership? Frenemies? Or just marketing chaos to keep us arguing until 2027? Whatever the case, the Lex Luthor armor is officially confirmed because every poster has him suited up. No debate.

Cast and possible cameos

Okay, let’s get the obvious out of the way: David Corenswet is back as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Lex Luthor. No surprises there.

But the fun starts with the side characters. Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) already teased her comeback, which probably means Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho are joining the ride too.

And James Gunn has already said that Superman would have a saga within the DCU, so it's very possible that this new film will work as a result of the many clues that may be planted in the Lanterns (2026) series and the Supergirl (2026) film. Depending on what is revealed in Kara's film, we can expect her to have a greater role in this new film as well.

Who’s the real villain in Man of Tomorrow?

While we may see a flurry of characters in this new film, let's not despair and think we'll get the Justice League. I believe these other heroes will serve more as filler and create a sense of a connected universe, much like the first film.

But I believe the central characters will still be Superman and Lex Luthor. With both having to put aside their differences for the greater good.

And who would be the big boogeyman that could unite this duo?

Honestly, for me, Brainiac would fit perfectly in this film. He could reveal more about the Kryptonians of this new universe, and his advanced intellect would explain the need for Lex Luthor's help. Besides, it's always a delightful dynamic when Lex and Brainiac fight or work together to see who can get rid of the big blue .

Look, it’s simple: Man of Tomorrow isn’t just another Superman sequel. It’s shaping up to be the movie where Gunn starts playing with the full DCU toybox.

If DC sticks the landing, 2027 won’t just belong to the Man of Steel. It’ll be the year the DCU finally roared to life.
