In recent interviews, Jamie Lee Curtis has been talking about the possibility of her retiring from acting soon. Yet, before she eventually does, she intends to have at least one role—that of Jessica Fletcher in the Murder, She Wrote reboot.
The actress confirmed the news on the carpet for Freakier Friday premiere earlier this month: “Oh, it is…happening,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

“We’re a minute away. But very excited. Very excited,” Curtis continued. “But I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple of other things to hustle and then I’ll get to enjoy that work.”
The first news that something might be happening and that a film reworking of the classic TV series might turn into a real project first came about in June 2023 and later on in December 2024, with Curtis taking on the role of Jessica Fletcher. As a reminder, in the original series, legendary actress Angela Landsbury's character was a retired school teacher-turned-crime novel writer who suddenly became a detective, solving real-life crimes in her seaside town of Cabot Cove and elsewhere.
With the main role set, it is also reported that the script would be written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who also worked on Dumb Money, a drama directed by Craig Gillespie. Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal would produce the project with other cast members and script details yet to be revealed.
The original Murder, She Wrote series premiered in 1984 and ran for 12 seasons, with the final episode shown in 1996. The series was an obvious huge success, and as Variety notes, it peaked at a reported 40 million viewers a week, averaging around 25 million per episode while the series was showing.
Also, it was nominated for 41 Emmys, and Landsbury was nominated for one every year, but never won. After the series ended, it was followed by four television films. Later on came a series of novels and even a video game.
The series was also known for its guest star appearances, with an intriguing connection to Curtis—in Season 4, Episode 11, her late mother, Janet Leigh, was a guest star. It is now certain that we will have a chance to see how Curtis does as Jessica Fletcher, but judging by her recent role in Knives Out, the fans of murder mystery films and series will not be disappointed.
