Jon Peters is a singular Hollywood character. In a town and an industry populated by people who try to emulate others, the hairdresser turned producer stands alone. For reasons both good and bad. He clearly had a knack for spotting talent, as evidenced by his involvement with hits like A Star Is Born (1976) and Batman (1989).
Anyone who has worked with Jon Peters, however, will discuss the bizarre and often unreasonable requests he makes of his writers and stars. He also has something in the works, and his upcoming venture may prove to be his most controversial yet.
Peters wants to dramatize the Trump assassination attempt
Peters told The Hollywood Reporter that he's working on a film about the assassination attempt made on Donald Trump in 2024. The producer is a vocal Trump supporter, and feels as though the story leading up to the botched attempt would make for a compelling drama. He even has a name in mind to write and direct: Oliver Stone.
Stone makes perfect sense to helm a Trump film on paper. He's spent most of his career telling stories about controversial leaders, whether it be Nixon (1995), W. (2008) or even Alexander (2004). He has a preoccupation with history, and American history, in particular. He's also made arguably the definitive film about a political assassination, JFK (1991), which earned him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Picture.
Peters thinks a Stone collaboration would go a long way in doing the Trump assassination attempt justice:
"Oliver is an amazing writer, and I’m a good storyteller. … I haven’t pitched it to anybody, [but] Netflix would be a perfect, perfect place."
Oliver Stone denies any involvement in the project
It's certainly bold, and the involvement of Peters and Stone would draw eyes to the film. There's only one problem: Stone claims to have no involvement whatsoever. After The Hollywood Reporter chat, the outlet reached out to Stone to clarify where he stood. He had no idea about Peters' plan. He said:
"I am not working on an assassination movie or any other project with Jon Peters."
Another baffling anectdode for the Peters files. It remains to be seen whether the producer will get his Trump film made, but as it stands, it does not sound as though Oliver Stone will be going along for the ride.
