There is more great news coming for all Marvel universe fans: The X-Men reboot is coming! And it couldn't be more official than an announcement made by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. During a July roundtable set to promote The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Feige teased the audience, announcing that the X-Men reboot will be directed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier.
The reboot is expected to release after the Multiverse Saga concludes with the release of Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Feige stated: “It’s official, Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky to have him and very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. The script’s underway.”
Feige also called Schreier “an incredibly smart guy” and a “talented filmmaker,” adding, “We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts. And if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions, he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. He’s younger than me for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think was important for Thunderbolts, much more important for X-Men. Because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”
Noting that there are quite a few X-Men films that were already released, he also added that there’s so much more to tap into. “There [are] so many sagas within sagas for X-Men that that’s part of what we’re talking about now — which saga to grow and build to while doing the most important thing, which is introducing all of these characters and giving them their due in our first film,” Feige added.
The X-Men characters became available to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the merger of Disney and 20th Century Fox back in 2019. So far, quite a number of renowned actors have previously played X-Men characters, including Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum (Gambit).
What the new X-Men reboot script will focus on and which actors will be involved remains to be known, but just this announcement by Feige has certainly piqued the interest of all Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.
