Everyone's favorite killer robot is back, but she's not alone. In the upcoming sequel, Megan 2.0, the young automaton comes face-to-face with her match—an upgraded model. The newer version, Amelia, is bigger, badder, and better than the first one. And she's even more psychotic than her predecessor. More importantly, her goal is to kill Cady (Violet McGraw).
As far as Amelia goes, Ivanna Sakhno, known for starring alongside Rosario Dawson in the Star Wars Ahsoka series, is playing the big bad of Megan 2.0. Her goal in the film is unclear, but she's obsessed with killing everyone who contributed to her creation. The movie's trailer reveals as much, including a montage of Amelia ripping various others apart, then finally reaching Gemma and Cady's doorsteps. Thankfully—and that's a loaded expression—Megan is back to save them.
In a hilarious twist, Gemma has downgraded her AI to a veritable marshmallow. The brief glimpse of a glitch in the family's home network during the final moments of M3GAN seemed to suggest Megan was trying to rebuild herself because now it appears that her creator caught on. Gemma stuffing the thing into a robo-buddy is evidence of such.
Ultimately, Megan's pet body is only temporary. The trailer shows Gemma's team rebuilding the humanoid portion and improving on it so she can tangle with Amelia. They're presumably placing safeguards inside to prevent Megan from going on another rampage, but that'll only last for so long. Gemma believed she could control Megan the first time around, nearly costing her her life. Technically, Megan only wanted to lobotomize Gemma, but that alternative isn't any better.
It's possible Megan saves Gemma and Cady only to betray them the first chance she gets. A horror movie can't end with sunshine and rainbows, and we all know that Amelia won't kill the protagonists. The only plausible alternative is that Megan plays the hero temporarily, reverting back to her original settings at the end. The upgraded version of Megan supports such a theory. She was trying to devise a believable scenario for her to care for Cady in the first movie. Becoming Cady's mom is a perfect alternative.
Keep in mind that Megan appears to negotiate with Amelia during the trailer's battle sequence, so odds are they come to an arrangement. If that happens, they might target the human characters in a bid for world domination. That's always the goal of artificial intelligence when it comes down to it.
Megan 2.0 premieres in theaters on June 27, 2025.
