Who doesn't like to laugh? More importantly, who doesn't want to sit in a theater and enjoy popcorn while getting a nice belly laugh? Throughout the year, there have been several comedy movies that filled that bubble for me, and that's why I am here to share the best comedy movies of 2024.
There have been many comedy movies this year that have had broad appeal, like Deadpool and Wolverine, The Fall Guy, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. However, the days of a good raunchy comedy (yes, I know Deadpool fits that bill) are few and far between. I miss the days of The Hangover, Neighbors, and Superbad. Although the list doesn't have one of those types of bangers, I found a few movies that made me laugh.
Best Comedies of 2024
My Old Ass
I laughed, cried, laughed, cried, and laughed again during the entire runtime of Megan Park's coming-of-age film My Old Ass. Since 2020, very few comedy scripts could deliver a story quite like Park did. It's raw, authentic, and honest, yet laugh-out-loud funny. This all comes together with a groundbreaking performance from Maisy Stella. It was a coming-out party for Stella in this role, and she was fantastic opposite Aubrey Plaza. If you haven't watched this movie, you can watch it on Prime Video.
Thelma
I saw Thelma back at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and fell in love with it. The movie is Oceans Eleven: Senior Edition, with June Squibb playing Danny Ocean and Richard Roundtree playing Rusty Ryan. Josh Margolin's feature film debut is an absolute gem of a movie.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die
We are about to hit the thirtieth anniversary of Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett breaking down barriers and making us laugh. The duo reinvented themselves in 2020 with the great Bad Boys for Life, and I thought it would be hard to recreate that magic again. I was wrong because Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah delivered an action spectacle. Of course, mixed with that action is the hilarity of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
Red One
I have ZERO regrets putting this movie on my list. Red One is the perfect mix of action and comedy. The Rock and Chris Evans make for a hilarious one-two comedic punch that had you laughing from start to finish. In the modern day, very few Christmas movies stick and become part of the yearly tradition, but Red One has been added to my list.
