Netflix's Frankenstein: First preview depicts Oscar Isaacs as the mad doctor

Netflix is the latest streamer to revive the age-old tale of Frankenstein. Guillermo Del Toro is directing a feature-length movie about the mad scientist who creates a living person from corpses.

Netflix is adding yet another original movie to its catalog later this year. This time, it's Frankenstein. The Netflix Original produced by Guillermo Del Toro and stars Oscar Isaacs, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz. Frankenstein's streaming premiere is still a ways off, but the first glimpses are already making the rounds.

A new image of Isaacs as the mad scientist shows him speaking to a group of scholars. They're all around Frankenstein as he makes an impassioned speech, holding some cylinder. Its contents are most intriguing because this version could boil down the ability to reanimate the dead into a serum. Typically, it hinges on the doctor syncing several scientific devices until something sticks. But, perhaps this time, Frankenstein has perfected his procedure with a serum. Granted, while that sounds a lot like Re-Animator, it's a fresh take on the story that's portrayed Doctor Frankenstein as stumbling across the secret to reanimating the dead by accident.

In addition to the sole picture released, the description of two others provides more information on the upcoming Netflix movie. One of them depicts Victor (Isaacs) in a spat with Elizabeth Lavenza (Goth), Victor's love interest. Their argument is of interest since they're described as lovers. Perhaps the couple comes to an impasse when the good doctor brings his creation to life. The second image and its description back up this theory.

Another image teased describes the Monster (Elordi) looming over Victor as he sleeps. Even without context, any time a shadowy character stands over another's bedside—as they sleep—it's a bad sign of things to come. That was the case with the Creature in Showtime's Penny Dreadful series and practically every incarnation of Frankenstein's monster that's come before.

As for other noteworthy stalwarts from the movie, Christoph Waltz's Dr. Pretorious stands out. The character is known as Dr. Frankenstein's mentor and generally the deciding force that convinces Victor to conduct his infamous experiment—in other versions. He'll likely serve the same purpose in Netflix's upcoming take, although Pretorious has another goal. The doctor's doctor reportedly goes hunting for the monster. He may be tracking it down for its scientific value, or it may be to prevent the abomination from sullying Frankenstein's reputation. Pretorious would be smart to worry since any negative feedback on Frankenstein will fall back on him. He's his mentor, after all.

The streaming service will presumably release more images, clips, and marketing promotions as the debut draws nearer, but for now, that's all Netflix has to offer.

Netflix's Frankenstein debuts in November 2025.
