There is an onslaught of films still lingering in theaters, but as far as new releases are concerned, the new year doesn't have much to brag about. As we do each and every week, we share the latest films set to hit theaters and streaming.
On the streaming side, A24's The Front Room will be released on MAX on January 3. Singer Brandy leads this horror/thriller that was met with lackluster reviews by critics and audiences. That said, I always recommend checking movies out for yourself, especially when you have a light week of releases like this week.
In Theaters
We have a hangover of movies that were released during the Christmas break. You have kid movies in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Moana 2 still in theaters. For adults, you have the masterful Robert Eggers film Nosferatu, Timothee Chalamet starring as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and the inspirational tale of boxer Claressa Shields with The Fire Inside.
On streaming, if you missed the hilarious 80 For Brady when it was released in 2023, now is your time to watch it on Netflix. You could also feel some nostalgia with the Meet The Parents trilogy hitting the streaming platform. On Hulu, the first three installments of the John Wick franchise will be on the app at the top of the year.
The Damned
Albeit in limited release comes Thordur Palsson's horror movie The Damned. The horror movie starring Odessa Young follows the story of a 19th-century widow and her crew on a ship that sinks off the coast of her isolated fishing post.
Se7en (IMAX, re-release)
If you are like me, you were young when Se7en hit theaters and didn't get to see it on the big screen. The David Fincher film is the latest movie to get a re-release, with the movie playing in IMAX. The psychological thriller follows two detectives as they hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives. The film stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix)
This week's biggest release is over on Netflix with the animated sequel Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. The film follows Gromit, who is concerned that Wallace has become over-dependent on his inventions when Wallace's smart gnome develops a mind of its own. I caught this at the 2024 AFI Film Festival and loved it. Merlin Crossingham and Nick Park's direction, with the brilliant claymation, make for a fun sequel.
