Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy will star in the romantic comedy You Deserve Each Other, based on the novel by Sarah Hogle, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
Badgley recently ended his five-season run in Netflix drama You, but he is still best known for his role in Gossip Girl. Fahy became a household name after starring in The White Lotus season 2 and recently appeared in Netflix drama, Sirens, and hit thriller Drop.
Described as a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers rom-com, You Deserve Each Other follows Naomi and Nick, a couple who realise they have fallen out of love just days before their wedding. Neither one wants to call off the wedding, so they devise increasingly outrageous ways to get the other to cancel the ceremony. Expect pranks, sabotage, and all-out warfare. As the couple tries their best to annoy each other, they bond over causing disruption and find a new way to reconnect with each other. They do say the road to true love never runs smoothly.
Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, the writers behind Never Been Kissed and He’s Just Not That Into You, are set to direct the movie, so you know the story is in safe hands. The script was originally written by Brett Haley and Marc Basch (I’ll See You In My Dreams, The Hero) but has since been revised by Silverstein and Kohn. The directing duo also penned The Vow with Rachel McAdams and Rebel Wilson comedy How To Be Single.
As mentioned, You Deseve Each Other is based on the popular Sarah Hogle 2020 book, which was a two-time Goodreads Choice Awards nominee.
Fahy and Badgley have already started promoting the movie on social media, exchanging cheeky banter after the casting news was revealed. Badgley posted an Instagram video walking through the streets of New York praising his new co-star’s performance in the recent comedy/drama Sirens.
“Okay, so, I don’t usually do this,” he told the camera, “but my wife and I just finished Sirens. Want to give her her flowers. Now obviously there’s Julianne [Moore], there’s Kevin [Bacon], there’s Milly [Alcock], but this Meghann Fahy? This newcomer? This, like, refreshing, gawky beauty? Love it. Love you.”
Fahy commented on the post, thanking him for his “kind” words and saying hello to Badgley’s wife Domino Kirke. “And that her taste is flawless.”
The pair exchanged more playful jabs in the comment section, with Fahy calling out the actor for describing her as “gawky” and Badgley joking that her comment felt like a “trap.” She responds with “Heard you did a lot of that on your show. I never watched it” in reference to his murderous character of Joe in You. He quickly bites back, noting how the show “somehow succeeded without your support.”
