Piece by Piece is an inspirational block-sized look at the life of Pharrell Williams
By Trey Weston
Growing up, Legos were a big part of my childhood. From playing with them as a kid to viewing the Lego movies on the big screen, it is safe to say that those were some of the more memorable moments of my formative years.
But, as I've grown older, I never thought I would see a documentary based on a celebrity told using the little bricks that once inspired me to use my imagination. Yet, that's what Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville and 13-time Grammy winner Pharrell Williams created with Piece by Piece.
An exploration into his younger years
One of the more unique things about making the film a Lego movie is that it allows for the ability to take creativity to new heights -- with an emphasis on his younger years early in the doc. It talks about how he broke into the industry while also showing how he met others from his area, like Pusha T, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, and Chad Hugo, his childhood friend with whom he formed the Neptunes.
They also highlight his family and how much his grandmother meant to him. All of this is done using pretty cool animation effects.
You will want to sing if you watch this film
During the film, many of the top songs that Pharrell wrote, produced, sang, or, in some cases, all three, appeared. A few of the ones that had me singing out loud were "Hella Good," "Get Lucky," "Drop It Like It's Hot," and arguably the biggest earworm of all time, "Happy." It also featured new songs that were created for the movie.
Piece by Piece is an uplifting tale of a kid who followed his dreams
Ultimately, the film is a story of a kid who had a creative mind and never lost faith in his dream to be great. And what better way to tell the story than with the little blocks that made us all dive into the world of imagination? If you want to laugh, cry, and sing, look no further than one of the best animated films arriving this year.
