Goonies star Martha Plimpton refutes sequel rumors: 'There's no script'

We've been in a cycle of 80s nostalgia for a long time. It feels like every beloved franchise from said decade has been given a reboot, a sequel or a hybrid legacy sequel that brings back the original cast while introducing newcomers to set up more films.

The Gooniesis one of the rare 80s properties that hasn't gotten some form of continuation. It's been untouched by modern Hollywood, despite the continued success of many of its cast members. It was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced, right? Well, yes and no.

The Sun claimed that aGooniessequel was in the works with the original cast and producer Steven Spielberg returning, but it turns out the claims were unfounded. Martha Plimpton, one of the stars of the original 1985 film, said as much during on September 12.

Plimpton played Stef, the tomboy of the titular group, took to IG to assert that there are no plans to reviveThe Gooniesfranchise. She did not mince words, either. She plastered definitive text over a grey background that read:

"People, there is no 'Goonies 2' script, there is no one 'attached.' Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real. "

There you have it. The actress also urged fans of the original film to go out and vote. That said, there were legitimate attempts to mount aGooniessequel in the past. Richard Donner, the director of the film, claimed that he and Spielberg cooked up an idea in 2004, but that Warner Bros. passed on it.

The topic came up once again in 2020, when Steven Spielberg teased the possibility of bringing the cast togetherduring a reunion interview. Unfortunately, Donner's passing in 2021 effectively put an end to any momentum thatGoonies 2has built up (which, admittedly, didn't seem like a lot).

Plimpton's co-star, Corey Feldman, doubled down on her claims of there never being aGooniessequel. He tweeted that he had no information of a film in the works, and previously tweeted that another film was "not gonna happen."
