Alien: Romulus is proving to be a comeback for the beloved science fiction franchise. While prior installments Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017) were considered flops, Romulus has managed to gross over $100 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
Fans clearly want to the gory new ways in which Xenomorphs take out their victims. If you don't want to see the film in theaters, and prefer to watch horror flicks from the comfort of your home, then you will be happy to learn that Alien: Romulus will eventually be available to stream on Hulu.
Alien: Romulus will be available to stream on Hulu
In fact, Alien: Romulus was originally slated to be a Hulu original. Fede Álvarez, the film's director, told Variety that the film was going to be a streaming exclusive before 20th Century Fox decided to give it a theatrical run. Good thing, too, based on the box office.
"I remember making an announcement to everybody that this movie was going to in theaters, and there was a big cheer,” Álvarez recalled. “I was like, wow, even the gaffer cares that this goes into theaters!” This, of course, means that the film will taken longer to get to streaming.
Romulus will stream towards the end of the year
The release windows for Hulu (the platform it will eventually go to) varies depending on a film's box office success. A film like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes took around 85 days to make it to its streaming platform. That anticipated sequel took in $58 million opening weekend, which is actually more than the $41 million domestic haul of Alien: Romulus.
Assuming Alien: Romulus continues to perform well in theaters, fans can expect to see the film land on streaming between November and December of 2024. This is based on box office projections, and the positive word of mouth the film has received.
Once it's on Hulu it will, ironically, be viewed the way it was originally intended.
