The blockbuster sequel will feature new characters.

Jurassic World is back. The trilogy wrapped up in notable, if not entirely satisfying fashion back in 2022. It marked a culmination for the Jurassic franchise as a whole, as the stars of both the original and new trilogies came together to battle dinosaurs.

Now, the franchise is back. Jurassic World: Rebirth will mark a new step forward, as the title suggests, and will be making some notable changes to the previous films. For one, it will not feature any of the cast members of the previous six films. It will also feature a sizable time jump, according to Deadline.

Rebirth will feature a five year time jump

Rebirth will star Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey as the leaders of a research team who are trying to extract DNA from the few remaining dinosaurs. The reason behind their desperation? The events of Jurassic World: Dominion have transpired years prior. Rebirth will take place a notable five years after the events of the previous film.

This is something of a recent pattern in the Jurassic franchise. Dominion took place four years after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, in an effort to show the impact of letting dinosaurs loose on the world. It appears Rebirth will be employing a similar tactic to explore the aftermath.

While there will no returning faces on screen, there will be a notable Jurassic alum working behind the scenes. David Koepp, the screenwriter who penned the first two films in the franchise, will be coming back to pen this one. It will mark the first time he works on a Jurassic film that isn't directed by Steven Spielberg.

Fortunately, Gareth Edwards will be stepping into the role of director. Edwards may not be a household name, but he's proven adept at taking established franchises and giving them a gritty makeover. He did it with Godzilla in 2014, and again with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016.

The latter has hailed as one of the best Star Wars films of the Disney era, so hopefully he can bring the same magic to Jurassic. The franchise could use it.
