Scream 7 update: Horror franchise confirms release date for anticipated sequel
The Scream franchise successfully pulled off the legasequel in 2022. In releasing a fifth installment that was both a sequel and a soft reboot of the original film, the franchise was able to have its cake and eat it too. The same was true for Scream VI in 2023. Then, the wheels came off.
Melissa Barrera, one of franchise's newest and most essential stars, was fired due to comments she had made about the Israel-Hamas War on social media. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with a rep for the studio that helmed the Scream franchise, and they confirmed that they had no tolerance for what they considered antisemitic behavior.
Scream 7 is due out in February 2026
Then, the franchise's other main star, Jenna Ortega, decided to walk, leaving the status of the seventh film (and the third in the "new" trilogy) in limbo. It did not look good for fans of the new Scream franchise. Thankfully, things appear to be on the mend.
Scream 7 now has an official release. Neve Campbell, the star of the original Scream films, announced via G that the sequel will be released on February 27, 2026. Variety confirmed that Campbell, who was absent from Scream VI, will be returning, as will original screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who will be taking over directorial duties.
Christopher Landon was originally pegged to direct Scream 7, following the success of his horror comedy Happy Death Day. Unfortunately, Landon chose to exit the sequel, citing unhappiness with the production as a whole. He issued a statement that read:
"It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on."
Scream VI's main stars will not be returning
Scream 7 may have a release date, but it is still, technically missing its stars. Jenna Ortega just scored a massive hit with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and is slated to return to the small screen for the second season of Wednesday. Barrera, meanwhile, has gone on to appear in the acclaimed horror flick Abigail, which was helmed by the directors of the fifth and sixth Scream films.
It appears that the latest installment in the franchise will attempt to bring things back to basics, with original star Campbell and original writer Williamson taking charge. How this will blend with the two films that preceded it is anybody's guess, but we will definitely be there in February 2026 to find out.
