The plot and main script lines of the upcoming Robert Eggers feature Werewulf are still under wraps, but some important partnerships from previous Eggers’ films, particularly Nosferatu (2024), will be revived - from his partner scriptwriter Sjón, to main roles that will include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, among others. The projected release date for another Eggers horror experience is Christmas Day 2026.

And while script details are still to be revealed, it is good to remind the awaiting viewers that the film was announced as a werewolf horror film. With a multitude of werewolf-themed books around, it seems that the film will focus on the 13th century version one, as Eggers uses the old English spelling of the legendary man/beast. With a reminder about previous Eggers projects, it can be expected that the director/scriptwriter will try to stick to both historic details, but also to those from the myths, legends, and literature dealing with werewolves.

As far as the announced partnerships for the upcoming project, it is good to have in mind that Eggers and Sjón collaborated on 2022’s “The Northman” script. At the same time, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been confirmed as the man in the leading role, with Willem Dafoe as his opposite, and Lily Rose-Depp, who were both, along with Taylor-Johnson, involved in the previous Eggers feature Nosferatu, are set to formally conclude their talks to be included in the project.

While Taylor-Johnson had the hero’s role in Nosferatu, Rose-Depp had the role of a young woman who becomes the object of a vampire’s desire. On the other hand, Dafoe, along with being featured in Nosferatu, also had roles in two previous Eggers' films - The Lighthouse and The Northman.

On the production side of things, the film will be made under the auspices of Focus Features with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title producing alongside Eggers and Sjón, with Maiden Voyage’s Chris and Eleanor Columbus serving as executive producers.

While some of the key details of Werewulf are yet to be revealed, the devoted fans of Eggers' previous features have already circled the projected release date, hoping to have a very scary Christmas 2026.

With the cast assembling, we should start to get updates on the film in the months ahead and hopefully get our first official teases for the film sometime later this year or in early 2026.
