'The Sandlot' co-stars have meta reunion during chance encounter in public

The Sandlot actors, Patrick Renna and Marty York recently ran into one another at a mall. Their exchange played out hilariously for several reasons.

Actor Marty York probably hears it often, but fans never tire of saying, "Hey, Yeah-Yeah." The iconic line from 1993's sports-comedy, The Sandlot, aged like fine wine, becoming a quote familiar to nearly every millennial.

Most recently, actor Patrick Renna was in the position to repeat the iconic quote during a brief encounter with York, except he didn't. Instead, Renna and York exchanged awkward glances back and forth during an Instagram reel.

In the clip, Renna is gliding up an escalator while eating a sizable chicken sandwich. At the same time, York is riding down the opposing side, looking insanely jacked, and carrying even more protein powder to presumably consume at his leisure. The caption to the video reads: When you see a jacked Yeah-Yeah on your cheat day.

For context, actor Marty York is now a fitness enthusiast and trainer. He didn't pursue Hollywood dreams after The Sandlot's success but instead found passion in fitness. York rocks an impressive physique—one that maintains a healthy balance, avoiding the extremes that typically come with the gym rat lifestyle.

In contrast, Renna, York's co-star from The Sandlot, is embracing his dad-bod era as he navigates his 40s. That's why Yeah-Yeah catching him munching on a fried chicken sandwich on an escalator is embarrassing.

Obviously, York doesn't shame his buddy for eating—regardless of his choices. They're just playing to their audience, comically mimicking how a real-life Yeah-Yeah would react to seeing Ham out in the wild. Even though they're fictional characters, the pair running into one another under those circumstances would be hilarious.

Given Ham's boisterous nature, he would probably exaggerate by telling Yeah-Yeah that he doesn't need any more protein powder—implying he's big enough. We don't know for sure, although Ham is known for getting a kick out of almost anything.

The actors' playful reunion aside, it's about time that The Sandlot alums reunite for a revival. Several 90s properties are undergoing similar treatments as we speak, and the stars of the sports comedy should seize the opportunity.

Nevertheless, The Sandlot deserves a revival, ideally with as many of the original stars as possible returning. The challenge lies in convincing nearly every inactive member of the cast to return to Hollywood. Tom Guiry and Patrick Renna are exceptions since both have remained on the scene, but the rest of the team is up for debate.

For example, Mike Vitar—the actor who played Benny in the original film—hasn't had an acting role since the 90s. He's focused primarily on his serious career as a firefighter, making it unlikely that he will return. That's not to say he won't; perhaps a well-written story could convince Vitar to reprise his role. He wouldn't necessarily need to don a baseball uniform, either. Vitar's appearance can be as simple as narrating the beginning to recap where everyone has been.

The other cast members are in the same position, although their participation isn't as crucial as Vitar's is. Fans would appreciate as many cast member returns as possible, but that's contingent on Disney greenlighting a project. The multimedia giant previously had a series based on The Sandlot in development, though the project came to an abrupt halt for unknown reasons. With that departure in mind, now's the correct time to greenlight a movie instead.

The Sandlot is streaming on Disney Plus.
