The Super Marios Bros. Movie 2 gets a fresh title

The title The Super Mario Galaxy Movie pays homage to Nintendo’s classic game, Super Mario Galaxy, which was originally released in 2007 for the Wii. The announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct presentation on Friday, Sept. 12, marking the beginning of the countdown to the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game, released on September 13, 1985.

The teaser provides fans with a cinematic experience that resemblesd a space documentary. It features Mario napping under a tree, Princess Peach’s castle in the distance, and a camera that zooms all the way up to outer space. Quick cameos from Monty Mole burrowing, Cheep-Cheeps swimming, and Toads scurrying around reminded everyone that the Mushroom Kingdom is still vibrant and chaotic.

For anyone needing a refresher, Mario and Luigi are two plumbers from Brooklyn who find themselves transported to the mystical Mushroom Kingdom. Mario teams up with Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong to rescue Luigi from the clutches of the evil Koopa King, Bowser. It's a classic adventure filled with chaos.

The original film, released in 2023, made an impressive $1.36 billion worldwide, establishing a new standard for video game adaptations. It is currently the fifth-highest-grossing animated film of all time, following only major titles like Ne Zha 2, Inside Out 2, The Lion King, and Frozen 2. Clearly, the red-overall-clad plumbers have achieved what most superheroes can only dream of: dominating the global box office.

A connection back to The Super Marios Bros. Movie in the sequel

For me, the new title perfectly captures Princess Peach's quote from the first film, where she mentions a vast universe filled with galaxies. I can imagine that in this new film, our heroes will leave the Mushroom Kingdom behind and venture into these galaxies. What new worlds, strange creatures, or cosmic challenges will our favorite plumbers encounter? One thing is certain: the stakes are higher than ever, and this next adventure promises to be both unpredictable and thrilling.

Fans can celebrate or prepare themselves, as the all-star voice cast is back for the upcoming project. Chris Pratt reprises his role as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Princess Peach, Charlie Day comes back as Luigi, Jack Black is back as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key will return as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson returns as Kamek.

Nintendo is not stopping there. They are collaborating with Sony Pictures on a Legend of Zelda movie, set to be released on March 26, 2027. The film will be directed by Wes Ball and will star Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Clearly, we can't get enough of Nintendo in theaters!

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Mario or simply enjoy watching plumbers defy the laws of physics, one thing is clear: the next chapter of the saga promises to be unmissable. With high stakes, familiar characters, and the kind of chaos that only Mario can create, audiences around the world will be eagerly counting down the days.
