Joseph Kosinski helped revitalize the Top Gun franchise with Top Gun: Maverick, and now he is looking to bring another popular 1980s franchise back into the 21st century. Kosinski teamed with Tom Cruise to deliver the long-awaited Top Gun sequel in 2022, which proved to be a monumental success. Kosinski then further solidified his reputation as a blockbuster filmmaker with Brad Pitt’s F1, which was another huge hit this summer.

It is now reported via Variety that Kosinski’s next project will be a reboot of the classic 1980s cop show Miami Vice. Premiering in 1984, Miami Vice starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs, two Miami detectives taking on the drug trade in South Florida. The show ran for five seasons, ending in 1989.

Kosinski’s new Miami Vice movie will be released by Universal, who clearly sees it as another potential blockbuster from the filmmaker. They have already given it a summer release date of Aug. 6, 2027. The movie will also be shot for IMAX, hoping to capture that must-see big screen experience that Kosinski has pulled off with Top Gun: Maverick and F1. Casting for the lead roles is also underway, with the movie scheduled for production next year.

Joseph Kosinski is the perfect director for the Miami Vice movie

While some might scratch their heads and wonder about the necessity of a Miami Vice reboot, the addition of Joseph Kosinski as director makes it a must-see event. Kosinski has established himself as the ideal director of big, exciting popcorn movies that bring audiences to the cinema and deliver high-octane fun.

Miami Vice was already given the movie treatment before, with Michael Mann directing the 2006 movie, starring Colin Farrell as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs. Given that Mann was a producer on the original series, it made sense for him to helm the movie. However, while Miami Vice has become a cult classic over the years, it initially failed at the box office, so it makes sense they would attempt to go in a new direction this time.

With Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski showed how he could capture the spirit of a beloved franchise and still make it exciting for modern audiences. Even more essential, he was able to make the 80s feel of the original movie work for the sequel. With the new Miami Vice reportedly being a 1980s-set period piece, Kosinski can nail that vibe.
