Wayans brothers are reuniting for new installment in the Scary Movie franchise
Scary Movie is a franchise that has, fittingly, mirrored the trajectory of the horror franchises that it has parodied. The first couple films are beloved by fans, and the further it has gone on, the less the films hold up. Scary Movie 5, the last installment to date, currently sits at 4% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hope has been restored to the Scary Movie franchise, however, in the form of its creators: the Wayans brothers. Keenen Ivoy Wayans directed the first two films, while Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans acted and wrote the screenplays. They departed after that, but Deadline reports that they're going to come back and helm the sixth installment.
The siblings will write and produce the new film
The outlet states that Keenen, Shawn, and Marlon will write and produce the new Scary Movie film alongside Rick Alvarez. The siblings issued a statement once the Miramax deal was solidified, and made it clear that they were excited to reclaim the franchise from the dregs of its final two entries:
"We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago."
Anna Faris is also considering a return
Miramax boss Jonathan Glickman was similarly enthused. He praised the Wayans in his statement, and noted that the timing could not be better to bring "Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision" back to the screen after a long hiatus.
The Wayans are not the only component of the original Scary Movie who is considering a return. Anna Faris, the female lead of the first four films, told People Magazine that she would only want to come back to the franchise if her co-star, Regina King, came back as well. "I would love to work with Regina again. I just love her so much," she noted.
All things considered, Scary Movie fans will be getting the franchise's best film in decades!
