Every Christmas, we gather around and watch some of our favorite Christmas-themed movies. One of my personal favorites is the live-action Grinch movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It features an incredible and committed performance by one of the greatest comedic actors of our time, Jim Carrey. The big question is whether he would return for a sequel. He answered that question in a recent interview promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
I was told years old when I found out that How the Grinch Stole Christmas is sitting at Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes by both critics and audiences. How in the world is this possible? I LOVE this movie and can't imagine a world where people think this is bad. It's funny and charming and has a perfect performance by Jim Carrey as the Grinch.
Jim Carrey broke into the scene on the TV show In Living Color and turned this into a groundbreaking comedy career with performances in Ace Venture: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. This turned him into one of the hottest comedic actors in Hollywood. However, over the last decade, we've seen less and less of him on the big or small screen. In 2020, Carrey reemerged in the acting world after a four-year absence with his performance of Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog was met with strong reviews from critics and audiences. At the same time, many praised the film Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, which was a reminder of how much the comedian can kill any role that he is in. The sequel in 2022 received similar praises, with both movies being box office hits combining for over $700 million, leading to a third film releasing this month.
Speaking with Chris Killian from Comic Book while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Killian asked Carrey if there was one character he would like to play again.
The 62-year-old said: “Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch. The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
In a world of sequels and reboots, why wouldn't Hollywood figure out a way to put Carrey back into the infamous role? The original made $340 million at the box office and would ignite a new generation of fans of the classic film. Plus, who hasn't stopped watching these TikTok videos of kids being mortified by the Grinch? Maybe we could see a dark Grinch movie.
