Elio was arguably one of those surprise Pixar releases of 2025. It didn’t get as much promotion as it deserved, and it is a beautiful story for children and adults to remember.
The animated movie follows young Elio, who is struggling to deal with the change after the loss of his parents. He feels like he doesn’t fit in anywhere, and he thinks that maybe life beyond Earth will be better. Little does he know, he’s about to experience all of that, and he and his aunt are going to learn some hard and honest lessons along the way.
This is certainly an adventure for the whole family. The great news is that if you missed it in theaters, it will be on Disney+ very soon.
Elio lands a September Disney+ release date
When we first learned that Elio was hitting theaters, many suspected that a late September date would be when it would hit streaming. Disney and Pixar have patterns to follow, and September just made sense.
Well, the predictions were close. Elio will be on Disney+ on Wednesday, Sept. 17. There’s no long left to wait for this exciting adventure to outer space.
Join Elio on his adventure to meet the “Communiverse,” where groups of aliens explore other planets to find others to join them. Of course, the extraterrestrials mistake Elio for Earth’s leader, and he doesn’t exactly correct them as he wants to join them so much.
When there’s a threat to the Communiverse, Elio is the one to step up to negotiate a truce. Along the way, he meets a new friend, learns much more about alien creatures, and helps a family heal and be honest with each other. That leads to his thoughts changing on his current situation on Earth. Maybe it’s not Earth that’s the problem.
Elio is already available on DVD and Blu-ray
There’s some great news if you loved the movie in theaters. Elio is already available to buy on Digital, DVD, and Blu-ray. The DVD and Blu-ray release happened on Tuesday, Sept. 9, while the Digital release was back in August 2025.
I still stand by buying DVD and Blu-ray releases. This is the best way to watch movies, as you’re not worried about when they could leave a streaming platform and where they could go next. At least with Disney and Pixar movies, there are less concerns as they tend to stick around on Disney+, but there have been originals leaving the streamer with no future home, so DVDs are the way to go!
Elio is coming to Disney+ on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
