We have all been (im)patiently awaiting news about the sequel to The Batman (2022), directed by Matt Reeves, since its opening night. Now, we finally know that The Batman Part 2 will begin filming in 2026 with a release date goal set.
The Batman took the world by surprise. While many comic book fans doubted Robert Pattinson’s ability to portray the Dark Knight following his iconic turn as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, his interpretation of Batman as a violent and unfocused man searching for purpose was sensational. Director Matt Reeves brought noir inspiration and gritty violence to Batman’s world, focusing on political corruption in Gotham City and how it created mob bosses like The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and the enigmatic serial killer, The Riddler (Paul Dano).
Since then, there have been major changes at DC Studios, with James Gunn taking the reins to oversee the world-building of the DC universe. His take on Superman released this summer, and he is preparing for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, and a new take on Wonder Woman. How Pattinson’s Batman will fit into the larger universe is unclear, but we should start getting some hints now that The Batman Part 2 is moving forward.

Robert Pattinson will be back as Batman
A sequel, and the return of Pattinson and Reeves, was first confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2022. Reeves has also teased that The Batman Part 2 will take on political corruption, even though we didn’t have other details for the film.
However, a recent letter from Warner Bros. to shareholders finally confirmed that filming will begin in 2026. This is a huge relief to fans because the sequel has had many setbacks over the years—filming was first announced to take place in time for an October 2025 release, but was then delayed. Now the movie has an October 2027 release date goal.
For his part, Pattinson joked that he would be too old to play Batman by the time the film was made. In a 2025 interview with Hero Magazine, he was asked if he would return to the role. “I f—ing hope so. I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be f—ing old Batman by the sequel,” he said. When his Mickey 17 co-star Naomi Ackie, who was present for the interview, teased him for calling himself old, Pattinson didn’t back down. “I’m 38—I’m old.”

While there have been delays for the sequel, there has still been some life in the franchise. Farrell’s turn as the iconic villain led to The Penguin, an award-winning spin-off on HBO. The show chronicles Oz Cobb’s descent into the vicious Gotham gangster that we see in The Batman. It also introduces Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), who fights Oz for control of the criminal underbelly of Gotham. The show, particularly Farrell and Milioti’s performances, reached wide acclaim and kept The Batman fresh in our minds.
We will hopefully have more details about The Batman Part 2 soon. We have yet to hear about other returning characters, such as Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), Lieutenant Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), or The Joker (Barry Keoghan), who was teased in the end credits. Hopefully, we’ll see these familiar faces and many new ones in the upcoming sequel.
Until we hear more, we’ll watch for other significant The Batman Part 2 updates. It may be time to schedule a rewatch of The Batman, start The Penguin if you haven’t, and prepare your best cosplay outfit in anticipation of the big day.
The Batman Part 2 is currently aiming for an October 2027 release date.
