Let’s be honest. In the chaos of theatrical releases, especially with so many flashy blockbusters dominating the screens, it's easy to miss out on some truly great films. Sometimes you might even know of a movie, but choose not to see it because of bad reviews from critics. One of those films that many people missed or ignored at first, but absolutely deserves a second chance, is a 2025 horror gem that just landed on Netflix.
On July 24, the streaming giant added Until Dawn to its library, and it's already become popular on the platform. As of July 25, it's currently holding tight to the No. 2 position on Netflix's top 10 movies list. This means that tons of people are watching it, which was expected given that the streamer has been somewhat slacking in the horror department lately. With not many standout horror films added in recent months, Until Dawn arrived at just the right time. The horror movie drought seems to be finally over!

Most video game lovers will already be familiar with the film's title, as it’s inspired by the critically acclaimed survival horror game of the same name from PlayStation Studios. You know the game where every choice you make can mean life or death? However, the Sony live-action movie version is not a direct adaptation of the video game.
Although it takes place within the same universe and builds on the game’s mythology, the film tells an original story with a fresh set of characters. While familiar elements like Dr. Hill and the Wendigos appear, the movie’s plot is completely new and doesn’t retell what happens in the game.
David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out) directed Until Dawn from a script that was co-written by Gary Dauberman ('Salem's Lot, It Chapter Two) and Blair Butler (The Invitation, Polaroid). The story follows a young woman named Clover who, along with her friends, heads into a remote valley in hopes of uncovering what really happened to her sister, who vanished without a trace a year ago. But what starts as a search for answers quickly turns into a harrowing battle for survival as they’re hunted by a masked killer and trapped in a chilling time loop.
Ella Rubin, who is best known for starring as Melissa Mckendrick in Fear Street: Prom Queen, stars in the leading role of Clover. Michael Cimino, Odessa A'zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, and Maia Mitchell join her in the cast. Additionally, Peter Stormare returns to the Until Dawn universe by reprising his role as Dr. Hill. He voiced this same character in the 2015 video game.
Since Until Dawn is a licensed movie, it won't remain on Netflix forever. That said, it's important to watch it sooner rather than later if you're interested. Once the licensing deal expires, the film could be pulled from the platform, and you might have to wait for it to appear elsewhere.
