Many know all about Tinder and Bumble, two dating apps that certainly have some similarities. Swiped tells us the story of how the two came to be.
Throughout the movie, we follow Whitney Wolfe Herd, the woman behind Bumble. Well, she was also one of the co-founders of Tinder, although the men involved in the creation of the dating app would rather you not know that.
If you look into the history of both apps, you’ll see that there is a lawsuit, there is harassment, and there is a deeper story that many have always wanted to be told. Swiped tells that story, but there is a catch.
Whitney Wolfe Herd wasn’t involved in the production of Swiped
Despite the whole of Swiped being about Wolfe Herd, the CEO of Bumble was not involved in the creation of the movie. In fact, she didn’t really want the movie to be made in the first place.
To settle with Tinder in the lawsuit, she did have to sign a non-disclosure agreement. She didn’t want to sign this NDA, but she wasn’t going to be able to get through the settlement without it. And this is the big reason she is not involved in the production of the movie. There isn’t a chance that she will ever go against her NDA knowing what it could mean for her legally.
“No, I’m not involved in it. Frankly, I was informed about this movie after it was already off to the races. I think they had already written the script and done all these things.”
In fact, according to CNBC, Wolfe Herd didn’t even want this movie to be made about her. She asked her lawyers about shutting the whole thing down, only hearing about it after it was already picked up and the script already written. It wasn’t possible to shut it down, though, and it’s all because Wolfe Herd is a public figure with public information out there.
It’s not surprising that she didn’t want the movie made. After all, not only does it put her at risk of her NDA if someone believed that she was involved, but it is also a movie about her. Does anyone really want to watch a movie about their own life?
Swiped tells some fictionalized events of real life
With all this in mind, it’s not surprising to find out that the conversations that happened in Swiped are all fictionalized. They are what could have happened behind closed doors, because the only people who know about them are those who were in the room where it happened.
Some of the men have tried to defend themselves over the years, and there have been plenty of court documents and articles about the Tinder men, but none of these really go into the full details of the picture.
At the end of the day, we know that Wolfe Herd said that she went to Sean Rad to discuss the harassment from Justin Mateen after she ended the relationship with him. We also know that she continues to say that she co-founded Tinder, but that the men kept pushing her out of the promotion, and we know that she sued Tinder and then went on to create Bumble and find a man who was everything she needed and more. The fiction is in the details of it all.
Swiped is available to stream on Hulu.
