This Valentine’s Day, get ready to scream with the latest horror film from Screen Gems, Heart Eyes. Starring Olivia Holt (Totally Killer), Jordana Brewster (Fast & Furious), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and Mason Gooding (Scream), the new trailer reveals a serial killer who attacks couples every Valentine’s Day.

The trailer begins with a couple in a bedroom who are suddenly attacked by a killer wearing a mask with glowing red hearts for eyes, followed by a voiceover saying, “For the past two years, a masked maniac known as the Heart Eyes Killer has stalked, hunted, and brutally slain couples on Valentine’s Day.”

Based on the trailer, Heart Eyes looks to have similar vibes to modern slashers like Scream, but because it keeps transitioning between rom-com and horror, it also has a lot of cheeky and smart humor to it as well, giving off similar vibes to meta-horror films like Happy Death Day

The film also looks promising thanks to its talented production team. Heart Eyes is directed by Josh Ruben, who received wide acclaim in 2021 for his horror comedy Werewolves Within, which is based on the 2016 video game of the same name. And its screenplay comes from Christopher Landon, known for writing the Paranormal Activity films, and Michael Kennedy, known for helping write the script for It’s a Wonderful Knife.

When speaking to SFX (part of Gamesradar+) director Josh Ruben said "Heart Eyes is horror through and through. But if you can't stand horror, there's something for you in the romcom, for sure. And if you can't stand romcoms, boy, you're gonna love watching couples get massacred." The filmmaker continued, telling the publication his inspiration for making the movie. "For me, it was about asking, 'What haven't I seen in a while?' I haven't seen a movie as fun and as violent as Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Since we had a really awesome script, my goal was to make a movie that anyone would want to go to see other than myself. That's always the secret."

Heart Eyes will be the latest horror movie set on Valentine’s Day, following 1981’s My Bloody Valentine (and its 2009 remake) and 2001’s Valentine. But what looks to set Heart Eyes apart is its intriguing concept, witty humor, and its genre-blending formula that will both be a romantic comedy, while also butchering (literally) the standard rom-com tropes along the way.

Heart Eyes will have a wide release on February 7, 2025. For showtimes near you, visit the official Heart Eyes website.
