Franchises are becoming a thing, especially in the world of movies. People fall in love with characters, and they want to see them again and again.The Thursday Murder Clubis just the start of a series of books, and now that the first movie is out, we’re desperate for more.
Netflix originally picked up the first book for a movie. Of course, we knew it would be a hit, and that wasn’t just because of the likes of Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan as part of the cast.The Thursday Murder Clubis a quirky British murder mystery perfect for the likes of Agatha Christie andKnives Outfans.
So, now that we’ve watched the first movie, we want more of Richard Osman’s books to be developed. There’s not even a shortage of them right now, even thoughThe Thursday Murder Clubwas only published in 2020! So, what are the chances of a sequel?
The Thursday Murder Clubsequel isn’t greenlit yet, but we’re hopeful
As for writing this, Netflix hasn’t greenlit a sequel to the latest murder mystery. According toFilm Stories,there is a lot of hope that a sequel is going to happen from director Chris Columbus, though. All signs were pointing in the right direction when discussing a potential future before the release of the Netflix movie.
“If we’re lucky enough, and all signs seem to point in that direction, that we will be shooting a sequel or the next chapter—in the second movie."
It’s not surprising that Netflix is cautious aboutThe Thursday Murder Club'sfuture for now, though. This was always going to be one of those releases that would either draw people in or not at all. It’s perfect for those who need something lighter than the gritty crime dramas than we’re used to, but then those who want something deeper and darker aren’t going to want this Agatha Christie-esque story.
With the cast and the promotion from Netflix, though, I’m also on the side of optimism. It’s a fun story, and the sequel novel just further develops this core group of sleuths.
On top of that, the cast is up for returning. Helen Mirren toldRadio Timesthat she would be back “in a nanosecond.” It turns out that everyone enjoyed filming it, and that certainly shines in the story.
What would a sequel be about? (Will it followThe Man Who Died Twice?)
The sequel to this particular novel is titledThe Man Who Died Twiceby Richard Osman. If the movie followed through with the franchise, we’re probably looking at that being the next story. It makes sense, considering the character development for the core four sleuths follows on throughout the story.
Mirren’s character, Elizabeth, is pulled back into the world of espionage inThe Man Who Died Twice. A friend from her spy days is suspected of stealing diamonds, and now he has dangerous men after him. Now, if only that was the only crime to solve. This is a group of sleuths who love to solve murders, right? Of course, there’s a murder to deal with.
In fact, there’s a killer on the loose. Yes, a serial killer, which not only gives the group two individual mysteries to solve, but one of them threatens to bring more dead bodiesanda risk to them as they investigate.
The Thursday Murder Clubis now on Netflix (and you don’t want to skip it).
