There have been many movies that tell the story of war missions gone wrong, but very few of those involve a director who has war experience. That’s what made A24’s Warfare stand out, and now you’ll get the chance to watch the flick on HBO Max in September.
Warfare was written and directed by Ray Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran, along with Alex Garland. By having a war veteran behind the lens, it helps to offer an authentic take on life out in the desert, especially as missions go wrong.
Warfare is coming to HBO Max in September
HBO Max has set the date for when Warfare will hit its streaming services. Get ready for Friday, Sept. 12, when you’ll be able to stream it exclusively on HBO Max in the U.S.
On top of that, it will air on the linear HBO channel on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. ET. This is common for premium cable channels with streaming platforms connected to share content. It helps to get more eyes on the content, while making sure there is constantly something to watch on the cable channel.
What is Warfare about?
The A24 movie takes us inside a platoon of American Navy SEALs on a surveillance mission. When it goes wrong while they’re inside enemy territory, the group need to figure out how to remain alive and safe. It’s modern warfare throughout, and the brotherhood will not leave a man behind.
This is all told in real time, based on the memory of Mendoza, who went through the situation. It’s a raw and visceral take that we just don’t get with war movies. To help connect it to the real events, D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai plays a character called Ray Mendoza.
Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Conner, and Noah Centineo are also attached to the cast.
This is one of those movies that everyone should watch at least once. There have always been plenty of opinions about what soldiers and SEALs did during the Iraq War, but it’s rare to see the realities of what the troops on the ground faced. They weren’t all the men and women the publications would blast about for actions against the Geneva Convention or other rules of war.
Warfare focuses on the brotherhood, as they focus on survival. It takes a look at how Iraqi people would work with the SEALs, especially the translators, to help bring peace to their nation. Stick around for the end credits as it shows the real members of SEAL Team 5 who worked the mission the story is about.
Warfare will stream on HBO Max on Friday, Sept. 12.
