Hundreds of horror movies are released every year, and they can be hit or miss. This year, I found myself opposite people's opinions regarding liking a movie. Personally, when it comes to this genre, it's either very good or bad, there is rarely in between. As we have reached the end of the year, I reveal my favorite horror movies of 2024.
No matter how the box office shifts, horror movies continue to deliver for studios. However, if people sniff out bad concepts, they aren't shy about not showing up and seeing through the film a mile away. In 2024, we've seen movies like Longlegs, The Substance, and Smile 2 break down the barriers and make money. The fact that those three movies are different types of horror makes this genre exciting.
Best Horror Movies of 2024
Nosferatu
We are going to kick off the list with one of the most recent additions to theaters. Robert Eggers's masterpiece Nosferatu blew me away with his stunning visuals, script, and ensemble cast that knocked my socks off. In the lead, you had Lily-Rose Depp deliver one of the year's best performances. That said, Bill Skarsgard's Count Orlok gives this movie the edge in the horror realm because he creeps you out. This will go down as one of my all-time favorite horror movies.
Smile 2
Speaking of excellent performances, Naomi Scott's portrayal of popstar Skye Riley is a chef's kiss. As someone who wasn't a fan of the first film, Parker Finn delivered a creepy and frightening banger. He upped the ante in many different ways, but the battle Riley faced throughout this movie was haunting and devastating at the same time. Scott's performance is one for the history books.
Abigail
Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin are ICONS in the horror space. Abigail doesn't get nearly enough credit for how great it was. You have a loaded cast with scream queen Melissa Barerra, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, and Kathyrn Newton, who all deliver. However, the young Alisha Weir danced her way into our souls with her captivating performance as Abigail. Violent, scary, and downright bloody, Abigail will be a cult-classic for years to come.
Your Monster
Melissa Barrera makes this list twice, which shouldn't shock anyone as she has become our modern-day horror queen. Your Monster might not fit into the "scary" horror box, but the film fits perfectly in the genre. Caroline Lindy's multi-genre script is one of my favorites of the year. The film is funny, charming, haunting, and hopeful. Barerra and co-star Tommy Dewey (who plays the monster) are electric on the screen together. It's the perfect date night movie.
