Wicked: For Good will be one of the 2025 holiday season's biggest Box Office draws, and will conclude the fascinating friendship of the Witches of Oz, Glinda and Elphaba, portrayed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The sequel will also illustrate how the Land of Oz treats its witches, and from the Wicked: For Good trailer, it appears things do not go well for Elphaba. Yet, Glinda sticks by her companion through it all.
The film's set to premiere next month, and as a Wizard of Oz fan, I can't wait to be absorbed into Wicked's own magic and reimagining of the beloved characters for its conclusion. But since there's time until then, there's going to be a revisit of some fantasy-themed movies to help with the tide.
From witches to wizards, and a classic fairy tale, these movies are sure to bring a little magic until Wicked: For Good is released in theaters on Friday, Nov. 21.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Where to watch: Disney+
It's almost Halloween, and it's the right time to perform a rewatch of Hocus Pocus. Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson sisters, they try their black magic on transcending children's souls so they can live forever. To stop the cursory, it's up to Max, his kid sister Dani, their friend Allison, and a smart-talking cat named Binx to save the day.
Teen Witch (1989)
Where to watch: Prime Video and Tubi
Another witchy hit, Teen Witch, will surely transport you back to the late 1980s. There's so much to love about this underrated musical, from the ordinary girl becoming the most popular girl (through her magic) to Zelda Rubinstein as her mentor, and all the fun, iconic fashions and songs. Even better, it follows the same tone as Wicked, which is about accepting who you are and making it better.
Elphaba was misunderstood, and so was Louise, but they recognized what they wanted and made it happen.
The Harry Potter franchise (2001-2011)
Where to watch: Max
Wizard kid Harry Potter and his friends attend Hogwarts, a special boarding school where they can learn to perfect their skills and socialize with other like-minded students. But the evil Lord Voldemort plans on overthrowing the Wizarding Government and stealing Harry's powers so he can become an immortal. Don't worry, though. Voldemort got what was coming to him, and Harry made sure of it.
The franchise is derived from the immensely acclaimed book series of the same title and has become immortalized in pop culture.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Where to watch: Disney+
Perhaps one of the better live-action remakes, Beauty and the Beast very much follows its 1991 animated counterpart. Yet, in the live-action film, we learn more about Gaston's friend Le Fou and are immersed in the gorgeous cinematography between humans and household objects.
If Disney desires to do another live-action remake starring one of their Princesses, then they should rehire director Bill Condon, whose vision on Beauty and the Beast was beyond spectacular.
Wicked (2024)
Where to watch: Prime Video
You can't watch Wicked: For Good without watching/rewatching Wicked. The story takes place before the events of The Wizard of Oz and follows a young Glinda (the Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) as they begin their journeys at Shiz University, where they become unlikely friends. However, Elphaba soon learns the dark forces of the University and the true intentions of the Wizard. She aspires to make things right, even if it entails her own self-banishment.
As for Glinda, she remains Good through everything that has transpired in Munckinland.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Where to watch: Max
Go back to where the magic initially occurred with the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy Gale of Kansas and her little dog, Toto, are transported to the eccentric world of Oz following a tornado.
All she wants is to return home, and along her way to meet the Wizard, Dorothy befriends some interesting characters. From there, the group's determination to get Dorothy home has led to something far greater than they could ever know, and that there's really no place like home.
