If you’re looking for a movie to watch, you’ll likely want to check out Swiped. It dropped earlier in September on Hulu, but it’s easy to overlook some of the streaming releases.
Swiped is based on the story of how Whitney Wolfe Herd created Bumble. Before she could do that, she co-founded Tinder, although you won’t see the men involved behind that app admitting to it. Well, the movie explains why that is, and why Wolfe Herd wasn’t directly involved in Swiped.
This is one of those movies that could be great for teenage girls to watch. I also think it’s great for boys to watch, as they learn more about what some misogynistic actions do and why they need to be better, especially online. But is it suitable for tweens and teens? I’d say so.
Swiped is officially rated TV-14
The official age rating for Swiped is TV-14, which is the equivalent of PG-13 in the movie theaters. It suggests that it’s aimed for those 14 and over, but some slightly younger viewers could sit through it comfortably.
Sex & nudity: While the movie is focused on dating apps, there’s no as much nudity or sex as you would expect. There are a couple of scenes where nude photos are shown on screens, and there is one scene where Whitney is hooking up with someone, and you can clearly tell what they are about to do. However, there is no nudity or graphic sex shown throughout.
That being said, there are some words and phrases that you’ll want to look out for. Whitney ends up being harassed by men at her workplace and by people online, and these can be uncomfortable texts and social media messages to read. At the same time, these are why Swiped is such an important movie to watch.
Violence & gore: There isn’t anything to worry about.
Language: There are a few religious curse words thrown in, but out of all the major swear words, the S-word is the one that stands out the most. It’s mildly used, though.
Again, though, it’s all in the written form. There are some harassing text messages that include profanity.
Alcohol & drugs: While there is no drug use, there is drinking involved. There are people meeting at a bar for dates or to talk work, and that means there are characters drinking.
Overall verdict: Who is Swiped appropriate for?
Overall, this is a movie that could be great for teenagers in the house. There is a lot in the nature of online harassment and bullying that are topics that need to be brought up. Boys and girls need to learn what is definitely not okay, and how there is someone on the other side of the screen reading these messages.
There is also the topic of workplace harassment, especially after a breakup. There are topics of the nudes that are sent via online, and how that is viewed as harassment. These are all topics that you need to have with your teens, and this movie is a great place ot start.
Swiped is available to stream on Hulu.
