In the age of sequels, learning of one happening forty years later is no surprise. To no disappointment, The Goonies is getting one. Warner Bros. officially announced the sequel not too long ago, tasking Potsy Ponciroli with writing the script. While the film is still in its early stages of development, some staples are guaranteed to return.
For one, the cast will have to make some resurgence. A new installment following entirely different characters won't be received well. There'll presumably be new characters tacked on, but the sequel won't be able to survive with them alone. Original cast members have to return.
As far as who—the list is fairly easy to narrow down. Ke Huy Quan will definitely play a part. He was one of the first individuals to mention a potential Goonies follow-up. Corey Feldman also said he's on board with a new movie. The Stand By Me actor isn't officially attached, though his visible enthusiasm points to his coming participation.

Sean Astin will presumably join the fun as well. He's remained active on the Hollywood scene since his early years and doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. His latest projects include The Man in the White Van and Love Hurts alongside Huy Quan.
Josh Brolin and Joe Pantoliano will probably cameo unless their roles in the sequel are to help introduce new Goonies kids. "Goonies never say die!"

On the other side of things—a few might not show up. Jeff Cohen, the actor who plays Chunk, hasn't been involved in a Hollywood project since the early 90s. Cohen has since worked as a legal representative, running a law firm in Beverly Hills.
Kerri Green is another name that fans shouldn't count on seeing. Green's last role was in 2012, and while she hasn't entirely left the scene behind, it's unlikely that The Goonies 2 will pull her out of retirement.
The good news is at least one of the original's female cast members has the potential to return. Martha Plimpton, who played Stef in The Goonies, has remained active with roles as recent as 2025. Plimpton will presumably be sought after since she's available.

One might ask about Mama Fratelli's fate, and unfortunately, the actress passed away quite some time ago. Anne Ramsey received a secondary cancer diagnosis in her fifties, succumbing to the disease in 1989.
There is one character, however, that won't appear due to controversy: Robert Davi. The veteran actor is an outspoken conservative and is fully aware that his political beliefs may prevent him from reprising the role of Jake Fratelli. Nothing's set in stone yet, but if Davi is the type to abuse his platform by endorsing politicians during entertainment events, Warner Bros. will likely opt to keep him out of the new film.
